· 2007 US NATIONALS PREVIEW - JUNIORS
It's that time of year again - US National Championships time that is! This year
promises to be a bit more exciting than last year, with a new crop of juniors
and a possible showdown between Nastia Liukin (WOGA, TX) and Shawn
Johnson (Chows, IA). Many of last year's juniors have moved up to the senior
ranks, provided they were born in 1991 or 1992, although some (Corrie Lothrop,
Mattie Larson, Sarah DeMeo) have chosen to remain juniors to gain more
experience. With no clear cut favorite like in 2003, 2004, and 2006, this meet
should be very exciting. Look for Rebecca Bross (WOGA, TX), Jordyn
Wieber (Geddert's, MI), Sarah DeMeo (GAGE, MO), and Samantha
Shapiro (All Olympia, CA) to be the front runners.
The senior competition looks to be extremely exciting as well. For one, there
are questions as to who will show up and what events they'll compete after
July's US Classic. Few of the competitors competed all events and Liukin, Natasha
Kelley (Stars, TX), and Jana Bieger (Bieger, FL) all have lingering
injuries to deal with. Chellsie Memmel (M&M, WI) has already
indicated that she will not be competing on all events. Shayla Worley
(Orlando Metro, FL) is finally back after missing out last year and her return
is highly anticipated, as she'll surely display some of the more beautiful
gymnastics in the field.
Unfortunately it appears as though Shantessa Pama (GymMax, CA), Bianca
Flohr (CGA, OH), Ashley Priess (CGA, OH), and Natasha Kelley (Stars,
TX) are all out with injuries and will not be competing. CGA's Jacquelyn
Johnson and Hilary Mauro will also be absent after each decided to go
to the NCAA ranks early.
